Phones are great. HKG DSL, meh, not so much.

Well, we had an unplanned Internet outage for a couple days. Basically, we had no WiFi or even wired router access. We figured it out and fixed it today. I've never been a fan of DSL, and this trip didn't improve my view. As a networking hacker, the main difference between DSL and cable modems is that DSL forces you to have the phone company manage your network, whereas with a cable modem, you manage your network directly. In a place like Hong Kong, this is an even bigger difference, requiring calls to strange Cantonese-speaking IT geeks and a lot of confusion.

The amazing thing is that all of our fancy Internet phones and local cell phones all work together. The only thing which doesn't work, is Google Voice from our Android mobile phones. I've read Google Voice doesn't work that way. However, Google Voice works great from our computer. We just had a video call with adorable Caylie today! :)

I'm typing all this on a Mac Air, over a VPN, which is hosted on Amazon AWS/EC2. That way, if someone's sniffing our WiFi, we won't leak passwords... We are in the process of setting up an office here, with a combined printer/fax/scanner/copier, all over WiFi too. So far so good.

This blog is very Vivi-centric. Our family just can't resist. :) Also, there are some stupid hacking and geek tricks.
