Vivi likes to look around. Like all babies, she likes to be rocked and swung. That, I'm good at. Vivi isn't interested in watching the things we like. I can get her to look at the Christmas tree lights for a minute or two. Yet she vastly prefers looking at our faces and eyes. Vivi ignores iPad and phone displays for now. Thank heavens. Eva lost another ten pounds this week! Some of that is recovery from water retention. Some of that is extreme loss of sleep and tons of milk production. Vivi is hammering that milk supply. Vivi is gaining 1-2 ounces per day. These monster suckfests leave Vivi very, verrrrrrry sleeeeeeeepy. She sleeps like a sack of potatoes. This is a big improvement from when Vivi had some jaundice. Then, she was always sluggish, and sleep was fitful. Now, it's more like a light switch. She's up and about, eyes open, darting around. Then, in just a few seconds, she's a limp noodle. Too cute! Eleni and Charlie, you were also super cute babies :) Vivi will fall asleep mid-burping. She'll fall asleep while feeding too. I gave up sushi while Eva was preggers. She encouraged me to eat it, but that would be too mean. Here we are chowing down on Bamboo Sushi takeout! We get very good salmon and mackerel on the West coast.
Ahh, the great Rodney Dangerfield. I miss him dearly. Here's a classic, with adult topics but no swearing.
Enough foolishness! What's really up with the family?
Well, Vivi's jaundice is under control, thanks to incredible efforts by the mommies! Vivi is more awake, and she loves to look around the room and see what's going on. We had her watch over dinner and also a little party.
We celebrated with a new camera for Eva. Coincidentally, her Canon G16 died, the day after I put in the order! Her new small camera is a Fuji X-100T, with a stunning, fixed, 35mm lens (equivalent). The camera and lens are designed together, as an integrated unit. In fact, what looks like a "pancake lens" actually continues far into the body of the camera. It's freaky. The following test pics are all wide open f 2.0, and in very low light. They are downsampled to lower res for my smartphone. These are otherwise unprocessed jpegs, straight from the camera. However, they were run through the Perfectly Clear android app on my smartphone. You can get this for free via Amazon Underground. The Adobe Lightroom plugin is $150. Both are highly recommended! First, the last of the tree pics. We trash it later this week, when my brother-in-law visits us. You are only looking at part of these downsampled images below. Wow! What a camera! Scroll to left and right to see the entire image. ![]() ![]() ![]() And of course, a couple Vivi pics. This was after a 3am feeding, in candlelight dim conditions. My brother-in-law Billy is visiting. I cooked goose leg with a thin, brown butter sauce. The ladies cooked veggies and brown rice with huckleberries. A dollop of plum sauce is key!
Vivi is one week old, and past the worst of the jaundice. The cake is for mommy. Actually, it's not mommy's birthday either, but why not? Vivi can't tell the difference. She's a baby. I chose the "Rice Ball" face, named after the shape of a Japanese onigiri rounded triangular rice ball mold. First, some old-fashioned cheek-tweeking. Vivi stayed conked out the entire time. :) Not bad for a first attempt. :)
The stress of the newborn world, and the jaundice, made Vivi super uncomfortable. She was also very hungry since mom lost some blood. Finally, though, both mom and baby started to recover. We knew Vivi was feeling better when she could actually sleep for more than an hour. Of course, some snuzzling is in order. Super Cute! |
